Primary Children's Medical Center
Visitors
Primary Children's Medical Center (PCMC) encourages visits when the child's condition permits. Each nursing unit may have its own visiting policies and hours. In general, visits to patient rooms end at 9 p.m. All visitors must leave the hospital by 10 p.m., when the doors are locked for the night. For more information, check with your child's nursing unit. Parents unable to be at the hospital can call their child's nurse, day or night, for an update.
Patient safety is a primary concern. All visitors will be screened for contagious diseases such as flu or colds. Persons who are ill should not visit or should check with the nurse to determine what precautions to take. No one should visit the hospital who has recently been exposed to:
- Chicken pox
- Measles
- Mumps
- Pertussis (whooping cough)
- Tuberculosis
- Rubella
Parents and Grandparents
Parents and grandparents are not considered visitors; they are valued partners in the health care team. You are encouraged to participate in your child's care and are welcome at all times on the Children's Medical/Surgical, Infant, Immunocompromised Care and Neuroscience/Trauma Units. In the Pediatric Critical Care and Newborn Critical Care Units, parents and grandparents are welcome at all times except during shift change.
Spending the Night with Your Child
One parent is welcome to sleep at the bedside in the Children's Medical/Surgical, Infant, Immunocompromised Care and Neuroscience/Trauma Units. Special sleeping areas for a few parents are provided in the critical care units. These are usually reserved for parents who arrive in the night with a critical care patient. Arrangements can be made through the Medical Social Work staff for other sleeping accommodations.
Breastfeeding
Mothers breastfeeding babies who are not patients can make arrangements with their child's nurse to feed the baby or use one of the electric breast pumps available in the hospital. Lactation specialists are available at the hospital by calling (801) 662-3686.
Brothers and Sisters
- Siblings are a special part of our patients' lives. Sometimes it is helpful for well children to make a short visit to their siblings in the hospital.
- Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Visiting hours are daily until 9 p.m.
- Check with your child's nurse to arrange a time.
- Do not bring children who have been exposed to infectious diseases.
Friends
Each unit has specific visiting policies, and you should check with your child's nurse before inviting friends and family to visit.
- We encourage brief visits until 9 p.m. in most areas.
- Parents are the best monitors of which visitors are helpful to the child's recovery.
- If you have a large number of concerned friends or family, it may be helpful to arrange to update one person and have others contact them for information.
Outside doors are locked after 10 pm
To enter the hospital between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., please use the intercom near the door to reach a security officer. Parents will need the code number issued for their child at admission in order to enter after 10 p.m. People other than parents asking to come in to the hospital between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be screened by a security officer on a case-by-case basis.
